Before we got married, Jordan lived in Auburn for two years and we commuted back and forth. Lots of good memories were made in that town. We don’t have many reasons to visit anymore- aside from Jordan’s drill weekends (which will cease in November!!) but we had an important reason to go this time. Our German Shepherd, Beowulf, had to be taken there for spinal surgery. A couple of weeks ago he was unable to stand on his back legs and his journey has brought us here. It went well, he is doing fine, he is very happy, his back end is pretty naked and he’s learning how to walk again. He was stoked to see us!
We stayed overnight because he was being released the next day. The rest of our day consisted of yummy food and a Hastings visit.
We had a DELICIOUS taco at Tacorita – “southern fried chicken” it was called – with a light slaw, corn, a fried chicken strip and jalapeño ranch (OMG!!) (Also I am recently obsessed with jalapeños) and we split a blackberry marg. Afterwards we walked a couple of blocks to Mylks, a cookie company that is somehow only a local treasure. They have sea salt caramel stuffed snicker doodles that are our absolute favorites. We got two to enjoy before bed that night. For dinner we hit our very old but very favorite spot: The Pub in old town Opelika. I had the best bleu cheese burger of my life there in 2012, it’s been a few years and the only thing that has come close came out of the kitchens of the Biltmore (see Smoky Mountain Magic for more about that trip!) Bleu cheese is hard to harmonize but this place…. this place has it perfected. We sat on the balcony as the sun went down, drank Guiness and discussed Game of Thrones theories. What a good day. (Generally I try to follow a meatless diet the best I can but this weekend was too nostalgic for me to ignore.)
Hastings was bought out recently and is having an ongoing sale – we got real lucky and found a copy of mewithoutYou’s It’s All Crazy, It’s All False… On gorgeous marbled vinyl!! We also picked up Arcade Fire’s reissue of Funeral, three blurays: 127 Hours, Blue Valentine, The Fourth Kind and a documentary: Life 2.0. And just for fun, I got a dashboard cat Buddha!
In the morning we met Dad Higgins at the hospital to get Beowulf ready to go home. We got breakfast paninis, drove around to see how our old home had changed and then headed back to our little place in Birmingham.
